About Louisiana Land Records
Louisiana Pre-1908 Homestead and Cash Entry Patents

The patentee was the first owner of property after the initial survey. Once the patent was issued, the land became private property and was then sold with a deed. The townships, the six-mile-square land blocks which were the original divisions of land from the federal land grants, were then divided into 36 one-mile squares. The township numbering was the north-south numbering, starting from the center line. The range numbering was the east-west numbering, starting from the center line. The section is the one-mile-square portion (approximately 640 acres) of a township. That was was also generally divided into 36 equal squares (each of which might be divided another 36 times).

Springhill Cemetery, Caucasian section, surveyed and contributed by Harold & Lynda Phillips

==================================================================================

SPRINGHILL CEMETERY

This Cemetery is located in Union Parish at Oakland, Louisiana. Highways 549 and 551 meet at
Oakland. Marion is 10 miles from Oakland on Hwy 551 and 18 miles to Farmerville on Hwy 549 and
15. It is 1 mile to the Arkansas Line and 7 miles to Strong Arkansas on Hwy 549. From
Farmerville you go North on Hwy 15 for about 2 miles and go east on Hwy 549 through Conway and
Truxno. From Marion, Hwy 33 is the Main Street. Go to the west side of town and Hwy 551 will go
north to Oakland. At Oakland where four roads come together, the Springhill Rd is marked with a
sign that will go west from Oakland. It will take you to the cemetery which is about two miles
on the left. The cemetery will be in two parts. Originally there were two Springhill Baptist
Churches at this location, one for African Americans and one for White and the cemeteries were
together but separated by a cross fence. The African American Church can be seen from the
cemetery, but the white church moved closer to Oakland in the late 1800 or early 1900 and is on
Hwy 551. Both churches are active.

Before power mowers, the people in the community would meet at least twice a year to clean the
cemetery. The men would scrap the cemetery with hoes and dump the grass out back of the cemetery.
The ladies would show up later with all kinds of food for lunch. During lunch they all visited
and remembered the ones they knew that were buried there. They often spoke of things that were
funny that happened during their lifetime. Mr. Charley Murphy of Murphy Oil Co.at Eldorado Ark.
had relatives in the cemetery and enjoyed the fellowship, so he made every one of these
gatherings possible. In the mid Forty's the community decided to quit scraping the grass and
start mowing. They had often discussed people that were buried in there that had no marker.
Every one contacted their relatives and friends that had lived in the area, to see if they could
help with a list. Mr. Murphy liked the idea of a monument dedicated to the pioneers of Oakland
and all buried in the cemetery at the time. So there is a nice monument there with a list of
pioneers and a list of those buried there at the time of the monument. Also the markers with no
dates are markers put down at the time of the monument for the ones the community remembered to
be buried there that had no marker.

Since the Parker County Courthouse burned in 1874 there are no official
records of marriages that took place in Parker County from its
establishment in 1856 until 1874. These marriages records have been
obtained from several sources, bible records, personal papers, the actual
marriages records or family histories. This is by no means a complete
listing of all the marriages that were performed in Parker County, but we
feel fortunate to have collected this many for our files. Due to human
error in typing and transcription there may be mistakes.
