My Favorite Things

I don’t know if I could live without the stuff that I’ve put on this page.  I’m compelled to share them with you.

Moleskine – I couldn’t live with out my moleskines.  In fact, if you don’t see a post in awhile, it’s because I’ve renounced everything digital and have gone back to the “old ways” of paper and pen.  There’s at least one moleskine on my person at all times (two is more likely however).

Levenger’s Circa notebooks – These are little jewels.  I actually used huge ones all through college.  Made reorganization of notes a cinch.  Now I have one that I use for my planner.  I love it.  You will too.

NaNoWriMo – It’s become a yearly tradition.  November wouldn’t be November without National Novel Writing Month.  I’m obsessed.  I’ve written a good portion of two novels now (2007 & 2008) and I’m already planning my third novel.  Expect to have my blog completely overtaken by noveling posts once the middle of October hits until near the end of November.  If you hate novels, I’ll be back to normal sometime in early December.  I’m currently working on an American Crime series.  Oh how I love it.  *sigh*

Etsy – There are some seriously fantastic things on Etsy.  Most are handmade, but some are vintage.  I’m crazy about their treasuries.  They have great collections of amazing stuff; everything you could possibly want and more.

Title 9 – Women’s athletic apparel that fits women.  Except it’s not really athletic.  Except it is!  The best thing about Title 9 is that their athletic apparel is so fantastic it can be worn without embarrassment to the gym, at the gym for excellent performance wear, and then out of the gym to meet your best friend for a smoothie and the only thing you have to worry about is whether or not your mascara ran!  I love their clothing.  The reviews are done by real women and they give real opinions.

Lululemon – Vancouver based company specializing in yoga attire.  I fell in love with their stuff before I ever tried it on as I flipped through the pages of my Yoga Journal magazine.  There were no stores near me, until finally they launched a cute little shop in Tyson’s Corner!!  Now that I’ve actually gotten to wear their clothes, I’m in love all over again.  I haven’t put a single thing on that was horrible, or felt bad, or didn’t allow me the movement I needed to contort my body into Parivrtta Trikonasana or Arhda Chandrasana.  (Super secret note: Their apparel is also excellent flyball gear.  And they make this really cool travel pooch pouch that keeps everything all together for racing and it doesn’t look like a fanny pack!!)

Athleta – I have a thing for performance wear.  Can you tell?  Athleta is another of those great places that makes decadent clothing that propells you into fitness without a any crying or whining.  Buy their clothes and you’ll be begging to go to the gym or take a run around the block… just so you can put on those butter soft pants!

Random Haiku

  • hai·ku

    noun, plural -ku for 2.

    1. a major form of Japanese verse, written in 17 syllables divided into
3 lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, and employing highly evocative allusions and comparisons, often on the subject of nature or one of the seasons.
    2. a poem written in this form.
    Origin:
1895–1900;  < Japanese,  equivalent to hai ( kai ) haikai  + ku stanza; see hokku >[1]

Once upon a time I hate haiku.  It’s incredibly hard for me to imagine this now… but I did.  And also once upon a time I was going to be an English major.  Yes, this is also nearly unfathomable (though I still like books).  When I was at Elon way back in the day I had signed up for a Winter Term class whose name has escaped me now… but the idea behind it was that all you did was write haiku.  It was an odd choice seeing that I hated haiku so much, but I think that there was some other draw to the course that made me over look the burning hatred that I had for the little poem.  Anyway… prior to Winter Term that year my family spent some time in Florida.  My mother saw it fit to begin my haiku studies early and all we did was write haiku about everything under the sun.

We wrote haiku about the ocean… about ants… about hamburgers (back when I ate red meat)… about waiting… about, well about anything.  We wrote so many haiku you would have thought that we were as prolific as Bubba Gump Shrimp recipes.  And by the end of it, I didn’t hate haiku so much any more.  Incidentally, I never took that Winter Term course.  But I did cultivate and develop a great love for haiku on that trip to Florida.

And so that brings us to my in-progress autobiography via haiku.  Maybe one day if I’m ever famous someone will think that I’m brilliant for this endeavor, or maybe they’ll just think I’m crazy and they’ll pitch it all in the rubbish bin.  There are definitely gaps in the timeline, but as with all good posthumous autobiographies someone will be challenged to fill in the spaces.  I hope that they’ll utilize my same method for cataloging – the haiku.

I have decided that rather than keep these little gems all to myself that they will be published here for posterity sake.  You can find a random one popping up in the sidebar of this blog, or you can view the entire collection by clicking Haiku in the navigation.  Please don’t be disappointed, I never said that I was good at haiku… I only said that I wrote haiku.  And since this is an autobiography via haiku I’m taking some liberties that the ancient haiku writers probably wouldn’t approve of… namely I’m cutting out Mother Nature.  Some are natural… just by virtue of nature being beautiful the necessity to incorporate our surroundings into our life.  But a great many more are simply an anthropological perspective on the world around me.

A very dear friend of mine would always end his haiku with the 5 syllabic phrase “I suck at haiku.”  Perhaps I should do that more…
