ICB: The world is spiraling out of control & the death of Death by Chocolate

My good friend Christina and I have been participating in NaNoWriMo together for two years now. Next year, we were contemplating choosing a storyline and characters and each writing our novel using the agreed upon plot and setting. I’m not sure how this is going to work out, but it sounds rather interesting. I was also recently inspired by my Twitter-bud, @melissaoyler and her friend (Amy) who are choosing a random topic and then each blogging about it. Christina and I thought this would be an awesome way to test out our ability to write individually on a collective topic.

For the record, Christina and I announced yesterday our collective NaNovel. You can follow our progress on The Table Has Shoes (Christina’s blog) and The Collective NaNovel (my blog for NaNoWriMo).

This week’s topic: The Trellis in Williamsburg has sold.

Visit Christina’s blog to read about her thoughts about The Trellis being sold: here.

Fond Memories

Located directly on D.O.G. (Duke of Glouster) Street, The Trellis has been a pillar in the Williamsburg community for as long as I can remember. When I arrived in the summer of 2000 to participate in the most brilliant summer of archaeology I have ever experienced, my parents took me to a celebratory dinner to The Trellis. At the time, we didn’t realize that it was the place to eat in Williamsburg. Classy, gourmet, and with a focus on the most incredible desserts available, The Trellis rarely disappointed.

Except of course when it came to the complimentary appetizer.

Christina and I used to make bets. The prize? The loser had to take the winner for a Trellis dinner. (My mom keenly pointed out that in addition, the loser should also have had to eat the winner’s complimentary appetizer.) We didn’t go particularly often, but we did go for birthdays and bets and other celebrations.

On the eve of my graduation we had dinner at the Trellis.

A little part of me will always be in that restaurant.

Horror of Horrors

Yesterday morning when I was perfectly happy about the beautiful fall weather that we’re having, excited that the Waterford Fair is this weekend… an event that marks the beginning of Fall in our area, and just generally in a good mood, I get the following tweet:

Trellissold.tiff

WHAT?!?!?!

You’ve got to be kidding me! I mean… I hate the crappy little appetizers that normally consist of some kind of crazy anchovy thing, but don’t sell the restaurant!

Instantly, Christina and I knew that we had to collectively blog about this. Instantly, I called my mother, knowing that she would be just as outraged as I would at this turn of events. And she said:

Well, it’s official. The world truly is spiraling out of control.

And she’s right.

The man who purchased The Trellis has promised to keep a focus on chocolate, but you can bet that Desaulniers won’t allow the new owner to have license enough to keep producing Death By Chocolate, his signature chocolate dessert. A dessert that, I might add, takes multiple days to make! One year I purchased The Trellis cookbook for my mother for Christmas. The book says that it’s possible to make “Death by Chocolate” in one single day, but that it is recommended to spread the process over the span of three days so as not to overwhelm the chef. After reading that we’ve been too scared to try.

What does this mean?

Every year we go to Williamsburg for William & Mary’s Yule Log tradition. And every year we talk about going to the Trellis, but decide to save some extra money for the College Bookstore and go to some other restaurant. Unfortunately, this year our tradition will be void. The Trellis officially changes owners at the end of the month. As of All Hallows Eve, we will be celebrating the death of Death by Chocolate.

I may be luckier than some… I have one free weekend in October, and it might just be spent in Williamsburg eating one last meal at one of the most decadent restaurants I’ve ever been in.

Farewell, Trellis…. you will be sorely missed.

Wow, I so never read the part about 3 days to make the dessert! Maybe one day when Alex and I are rich and I have nothing better to do I will attempt it!
